Trust the Wait

We are through the Advent time of waiting, and the rush of Christmas Day. And now, we begin another week of waiting – this time between Christmas and New Year. It is the calm after the storm of preparation. The vacation day with no alarm set, and nowhere to be, except on the couch, with a movie on, and if you’re a part of my family, leftover apple pie for breakfast. A little bit of suspended animation before the rush back to reality after the holiday. A week that tilts between exhaustion, planning, and quiet contemplation as it begins to wind up towards the New Year.

Waiting for the new year. Just a day on the calendar, but it symbolizes so much – a new start. A date to resolve to make change, to start anew just as the calendar has. I admit I’ve never been good at making all those resolutions I’m supposed to make. In these post- (we-hope)-pandemic-years, I am even worse at making them - suffering a little from PTSD around thinking I can take control of things this New Year. Just resolving to roll with it all, good and bad, and do my best through whatever comes seems enough. Is there ever anything more that we can really resolve to do?

I was talking to a friend recently about the times of waiting in our lives – for the birth of something new. For the end of something that time has passed. Times we stand waiting for the dominos to begin to fall. It seems to be a theme that keeps coming up lately.

I was thinking about all of this while browsing my phone and a quote by Mandy Hale flashed by – one that is so perfect in the moment:

Trust the wait.

Embrace the uncertainty.

Enjoy the beauty of becoming.

When nothing is certain, anything is possible.

So here’s to the uncertainty – and all the possibility – of this New Year before us.

Heavenly Father – watch over us and guide us as we wait for this new year and new part of our lives to unfold, and help us to remember that through you, anything is possible - Amen

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. – Psalm 62:5

Diana is a founding member of Peace Church, and admits, she mostly looks forward to having permission to have pie for breakfast during this week…
