Into the Woods

On March 15, 1991, PBS aired the filmed version of the original Broadway production of Into the Woods.  I was not new to musicals, but this struck me as something completely different.  I listened to the soundtrack over and over.  When Disney released the movie, I made my family watch it.  I say one line all the time, “How do you know what you want / Till you get what you want / And you see if you like it?” from the song A Very Nice Prince.  I think that line resonates because it is so true.  We are all expected to know exactly what we want, but how do we know if that’s really what we want until we get it and then evaluate.

Over 10 years ago, our family knew that we wanted a new church.  However, the only way for us to find a new church was to try out several new churches.  Luckily for us, we found what we wanted in Peace.  We wanted a church that promoted social justice.  We wanted a church that focused on the reality of human life on this planet in this time.  We wanted challenging sermons and uplifting music (not just hymns).  We wanted meaningful traditions like candlelight Christmas Eve services, and singing “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” on Easter, but nothing too precious.

Peace Church is the point of what we wanted.  We have been so very happy to be part of this community.  To ensure the Peace Church we love continues, we will be modestly increasing our stewardship pledge for the coming year.

The finale of Into the Woods is Children Will Listen where the Baker is reminded that, “You are not alone, No one is alone.”  No one who comes to Peace is alone and that’s why Peace is the Point.

Creator,

Thank you for Peace Church.  Thank you for musicals that give words to ideas that we need but can’t always articulate.

Amen
