Enough is Enough!

Each spring, as my birthday brings me one year closer to Medicare, I become a little more obsessed with my retirement account. I have enough, I tell myself, patting my anxieties on their worried little heads.  Trying to get them to go to sleep—or at least to take a nap.

This morning I toggled on my phone between my Fidelity 401k, the Big Ugly Bill, and photos of Jeff Bezos’ wedding—a $50 million affair with 90+ private jets that transported guests from across the world.

When is enough, enough?  There’s the Bezos’ spectacle of wealth. There’s the inexplicable rise of my 401k (which should be falling, it seems, in light of current U.S. economic policies). And then there’s the denial of healthcare and food security to our most vulnerable. It’s pretty clear that a lot of people have so much money they don’t know where to put it, while others can’t keep the lights on. What a national disgrace that we as a country have decided to wreak havoc on the lives of millions so those with enough can have even more.

Holy One, encourage those of us with enough not only to speak out loudly but also to reach more deeply into our pockets to help those who have been abandoned by our country.
