Stand Firm and Open your Mouth
My friend is visiting from England. I was her host sister in high school when she spent a year in the US, and she has been family ever since. In this time of darkness, it’s been interesting to hear what’s happening across the pond. With headlines in the US giving us daily whiplash with little coverage about elsewhere in the world, there is some positive news in Europe.
The UK+ EU is the second largest economy in the world. Most Brits deeply regret Brexit, and Europe is “all in” on unity in the face of an untrustworthy US. They are fully committed to democracy and are positioning themselves to lead rather than follow. Most have faith in the American people and are encouraged by the protests, angry town halls, and outrage that is being expressed by ordinary citizens.
I’ve been thinking that holding signs feels futile—our elected officials seem they couldn’t care less. But others are listening. Let’s keep it up!
Holy One, let us hear your words. Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9
