A Group of Women
The story of Easter has always fascinated me. Most people are in awe of the resurrection, and the mysticism surrounding this terrifying and wonderful event. But for me, I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that the deliverers of the origin story of Christianity were women. Yes! People who, at the time, held little to no power and were often left voiceless and powerless.
In the quiet of the early morning, while the city still slept, a group of women made their way to Jesus’ tomb. They carried spices, along with sorrow and confusion. They didn’t yet know that they were walking into a moment that would change the world.
They were the first at the tomb, and the first to be told: He is risen.
The first witnesses to the resurrection were three women, chosen by God to bring the good news. Not Peter. Not the Roman authorities. Not the temple leaders. In like manner, not the president or his cabinet. Not the lawmakers. Not the rich or the powerful.
The women.
In a world where power often silences the marginalized, the resurrection story begins with divine affirmation of the people for whom the world has left behind. Their presence at the tomb reminds us that the good news is entrusted not to the powerful, but to the faithful.
And just like those women long ago, we are invited to carry this message of new life into a weary and broken world. We are called to imagine a world that joyfully releases the prisoner, houses the refugee, feeds the hungry, amplifies the silenced, and loves the lost.
The stone has been rolled away. The tomb is empty. Hope lives.
Holy One,
This season of Easter, help us to courageously carry your message of love, hope, and resurrection to a world that so desperately needs it.
Amen
