Look For the Helpers

When I met Holly for coffee a few weeks ago, she told me I’d have to tell everyone at Peace about the website that I had helped launch over the past few months. When I thought about it, I realized I should share more than just that one website.

I’m truly lucky to work with an amazing client list of nonprofit organizations - many here in town but not all. I’m inspired and amazed by the work my clients do. I thought that maybe sharing a few of these groups would give you a moment, in a time of endless negative news cycles, to reflect on how many incredible people continue to do good for our community and for our world - and for you. Take a look – maybe you’ll even want to make a donation to one of them to support their good works.

Daughters of Azaadi (DaughtersofAzaadi.org)– Founded by a husband/wife team born in India and now in the US, they are dedicated to rescuing girls in SE Asia who have been sold into human trafficking by their desperately poor families. The girls get safe foster homes and the best education imaginable. The beautiful photos on this website were taken by one young man on their team in India who was also rescued – after his parents sold him into slavery for twenty-five cents.

Kansas City Young Audiences (KCYA.org)- This group works to assure equitable access to the arts for children in Kansas City. They provide experiences ranging from field trips to the symphony, to teaching artists who go into schools to help teach curriculum subjects in creative ways, as well as offering classes and camps focused on the arts for kids K-12.

Touchroot Foundation (TouchrootFoundation.org) – A couple from Nigeria living in the US bringing solar water wells to remote areas within Nigeria, into villages that do not have access without hours-long walks. With the new time made available to villagers after walking four hours or more each day to fetch water is no longer needed, they are providing funding to attend school and vocational training.

The Regional Arts Council (ArtsKCgo.com) – This group supports artists and the arts in Kansas City through grants and advocacy. Their ARTSKCgo.com website is there for artists and performers to build promotional profiles about their work and post their performances and art shows. Free. And it’s also a free Community Calendar for YOU to go online and use to find great things to do in KC – all events and exhibits that support local artists and the arts. This was the big push over the last few months – helping to get a new website launched before the World Cup – so that the world could come to KC and support our local Artists as well (this site will be there long after the World Cup!)

As Mr. Rogers said, …”when I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Thank you, God, for all of the helpers. For those who aspire to make our world and our lives better. Help each of us to be helpers in whatever way we can as well. Amen

Diana is a founding member of Peace Church and built one other website you might be familiar with – PeaceChristianChurch.org – and is thankful for this place filled with incredible helpers!
